Adult Burn Center

The Johns Hopkins Burn Center is the only adult burn center in Maryland verified by the American Burn Association. Opened in 1968, the Center has a long history of providing high quality burn care to patients from Maryland and beyond. As a comprehensive Burn Center, we offer the latest research and technologies for the treatment of burn-related injuries that result from flames, chemicals, electricity and scalds. We also provide treatment for complicated skin infections and other wounds. Our services include an inpatient Burn Unit, an Outpatient Burn Wound Clinic and a Scar Revision Clinic.

Our advanced burn care goes beyond the walls of the hospital. Our team of physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, dietitians, social workers, and outreach and injury prevention specialists are available to help patients and their families as they go through burn injury recovery. The Burn Center provides many resources to patients, such as support groups and survivor reunions, as they transition back to daily life.

Leading the Way in Burn Wound Care

When you or a loved one faces painful burns and associated wounds, getting the best care available is crucial for both recovery and peace of mind. The adult Burn Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview treats burn patients 15 years of age and over. Its highly specialized team consists of experts in plastic and reconstructive surgery, physical and occupational therapy, nursing, psychology, nutrition, social work and case management. Startish's Story

A victim of an assault, Startish survived third-degree burns and was treated with skin grafting and reconstructive surgery at Johns Hopkins Bayview. Rivers turned to Julie Caffrey, D.O., for CO2 laser treatments, which have restored her to wellness with reduced pain and full mobility after completing 20 treatments.

  • The Burn Center Team

    The Burn Center uses a unique multidisciplinary approach which combines the latest techniques in burn and wound care, psychological and rehabilitation services, and plastic reconstructive surgery.

  • Dr. Caffrey in surgery

    Burn Center surgeons perform necessary procedures during a patient’s admission including early excision and grafting. Reconstructive surgery is also offered to patients.

  • Burn Center Nurses

    Burn ICU nurses are dual certified in advanced cardiac life support and advanced burn life support, allowing them to care for critically ill patients and their wounds. All Burn Center staff receive specialized wound training to provide high quality wound care.

    Nurse Educators provide education to nursing staff to ensure treatments are in line with the most current best practices.

    Physical and occupational therapists help burn survivors regain optimal motion, strength and function.

Patient Story: Pierre

One night last fall, Pierre Gibbons ran into a burning building to help a neighbor — and emerged with severe burns and very slim odds for survival. In their efforts to give Gibbons a fighting chance, specialists at the Johns Hopkins Burn Center tried a one-two punch they’d never used before.

Pediatric Trauma and Burn Program

Specialists at the Pediatric Trauma and Burn program at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center provide comprehensive care for all children under the age of 15 in the State of Maryland and surrounding communities, and treat all types of burns.
