Meet Our Heart Institute Leadership
Michael Puchalski, M.D.
Co-Director
Dr. Puchalski is co-director of the Heart Institute and medical director of cardiology at Johns Hopkins All Children’s. He joined the hospital staff in 2020. He was previously associate director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He also served as director of noninvasive imaging for cardiology after building the Fetal Heart Center and starting the cardiovascular MRI program. He was director of quality improvement for the Heart Center at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City and medical director of outpatient services at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Riverton, Utah.
Dr. Puchalski has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, authored numerous book chapters and given many talks both nationally and internationally. He is a fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology and Board member of the Fetal Heart Society. He is also a reviewer for numerous medical journals.
James Quintessenza, M.D.
Co-Director
Dr. Quintessenza is the co-director of the Heart Institute and chief of cardiovascular surgery at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. He originally joined the hospital staff in 1988, where he developed and refined complex neonatal heart surgery and led the congenital heart program for many years. He was one of the cardiothoracic surgeons who performed the hospital’s first pediatric heart transplant in 1995. He previously served as medical director of the Heart Institute from 2012-2015.
Dr. Quintessenza returned to Johns Hopkins All Children’s in 2020 after three years as chief and professor of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Kentucky Children’s Hospital and the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and as professor of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati.
Lisa Moore, M.S.N., M.H.A, R.N.
Senior Director, Nursing
Moore, who joined the team in 1990, has more than 28 years of nursing and administrative experience. She earned her Bachelor of Nursing degree at the University of Florida and a Master of Science in Nursing and Health Administration from the University of Phoenix. She has many years of pediatric cardiac critical care nursing experience and has served in numerous roles at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, including administrative director of the Heart Center, director of Pediatric Medicine, clinical manager of the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) coordinator. Moore has presented at multiple national and international symposia and holds an American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Board Certification for advanced nurse executives.
Todd Carl, M.B.A.
Senior Director of Administration
Todd Carl, M.B.A., is the senior director of administration for the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Heart Institute, where he works with the Heart Institute team to guide the continued growth of the hospital’s cardiology and cardiac surgery services. He joined the hospital staff in 2022.
Todd brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in cardiac services in the Tampa Bay area. He was most recently director of physician services and market manager for the HCA Physician Services Group Cardiovascular and Transplantation programs, West Florida Division, focusing on strategy, performance measures, culture and graduate medical education. Before that, he was chief operating officer and CEO for Cardiac Surgical Associates in St. Petersburg.
Todd has served as president of the national Medical Group Management Association’s Cardiac Surgery/Cardiology Assembly. He earned a Bachelor of Science in business management and a Master of Business Administration in business/HR management and entrepreneurship from the University of South Florida, and was an adjunct professor of human resource management for USF.
