Types of CPE Programs

The Part-Time Extended Internship offers a flexible schedule for those seeking to learn more about chaplaincy in a hospital and to develop pastoral skills. Typically, four to six students per campus are accepted into these programs. The student groups meet weekly for lectures, discussion and student presentations. Each student is responsible for providing a minimum of 300 clinical hours of patient care in the hospital, which may include on-call coverage of the hospital. Students should anticipate 3-5 hours of education each week and 10-15 hours of clinical ministry. The hours to provide spiritual care for the patients and their caregivers often can be negotiated understanding the hospital spiritual care needs, so that students may integrate this program into their regular work schedule.

Pre-requisites include:
- Graduation from an accredited college
- A completed application form and $50 application fee
- An interview with a qualified interviewer

Tuition: $825/CPE unit, plus $50 administrative fee if student requires a payment plan

The Summer Intensive Internship offers a full-time CPE experience for those who seek to complete a unit of CPE in 12 weeks, running from May to August. The Summer Intensive Internship is a 40+ hour/week commitment. This program is highly competitive and prospective students are encouraged to apply early. Summer Interns provide coverage for 2-3 hospital units as well as on-call coverage to the entire hospital. The student group meets multiple times a week for lectures, discussion and student presentations for a total of a minimum of 100 education hours. Each student is responsible for providing at least 300 clinical hours of patient care in the hospital. The Summer Intensive Program is the program of choice for seminarians seeking to complete their CPE requirements. Summer Interns may be placed at either Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center or the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The Distance Learning Internship Program offers a CPE unit by utilizin technology for students who cannot participate in any of our local part-time CPE programs. Typically, five to seven students participate in an on-line based, interactive CPE unit that requires written and video participation for class and individual sessions. Students must negotiate an agreement with a clinical site where they will provide ministry before the beginning of the program. Students who are accepted must own the technology required to participate in the educational seminars and sessions, as well as the ability to travel to Baltimore, Maryland two times during the unit. As with all CPE programs, students are required to complete at least a minimum of 100 education hours and at least 30 clinical ministry hours over the course of the unit. The Residency Program is designed primarily for ordained, commissioned, or endorsed ministers with theological degrees or comparable professional religious training. This is a full-time, year-long, experiential program at JHH that allows students to complete three consecutive units of CPE. Students accepted into this program are expected to work 40+hours/week including on-call coverage year-round. Students are challenged through assignments to specific clinical areas within Johns Hopkins for longer periods of time, while developing key relationships within the interdisciplinary team. The curriculum focuses on professional development as much as personal and pastoral reflection. Because the core group remains intact for a year, depth and learning occurs on many levels. A stipend in the amount of $35,568.20 is offered in addition to a complete benefit package to those who are accepted into this competitive program. Residents may be placed at Howard County General Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, or the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Residents will remain at the same hospital for the entire year.

- Master of Divinity Degree or equivalent
- Minimum of one ACPE, Inc. accredited CPE unit completed
- Ecclesiastical endorsement or in good standing with a faith group
- A completed application form and $50 application fee
- An interview with a qualified interviewer
- Eligibility to be an employee of the Johns Hopkins Health System

The Certified Educator Program is designed for the CPE student who has completed a minimum of four units of ACPE, Inc. accredited CPE and has met the Outcomes for Level II functioning set forth by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. Students considering entering the certified educator program (formerly called supervisory education) should become familiar with the certification process within ACPE, Inc. and should be prepared to make a long-term commitment to their education. Certified educator students are part of a regional peer group and are trained, one-on-one, with their supervisor. Exposure to theory and group facilitation is often the beginning as a student enters this intensive education at the JHH or Bayview location, and will last three years.
