Telemedicine, also known as telehealth, at Johns Hopkins Medicine makes it possible for patients to chat in real time with some of the world’s leading practitioners through computers, smartphones or tablets.
Telemedicine is a convenient and economical alternative to in-person visits. Patients living with conditions that make it difficult to travel benefit from telemedicine services, which can ensure expert medical follow-up and help patients stay independent. Also, patients who live in remote or underserved communities can use telemedicine to connect with care at Johns Hopkins.
A growing number of Johns Hopkins doctors and programs participate in telemedicine. Telemedicine services help providers treat more patients in need, consult with other experts to provide better diagnoses, add efficiency and reduce overall health care costs.
“Johns Hopkins has a long history of telemedicine innovation... it made sense for us to consolidate and support our remote care initiatives because telemedicine is an important part of our strategic plan.”
Rebecca Canino, administrative director
More and more of our doctors are offering follow-up appointments that can be conducted as online doctor visits using a smartphone, tablet or laptop with webcam. These real-time online visits are convenient and allow more flexibility to help the doctor and patient make progress on the treatment plan.
For example, a patient being treated for a chronic condition can use telehealth to follow up with her doctor from home, and discuss adjusting medications or any new symptoms that develop.
